JOHANNESBURG - Hlaudi Motsoeneng's permanent employment as South African Broadcasting Corporation Chief Operations Officer (COO) was met with criticism on Wednesday.

The public broadcaster is accused of not following correct procedures when making the appointment.

Motsoeneng was acting in that position for more than a year.

Communications Minister Faith Muthambi confirmed the move, saying he had done a good job in his role as acting COO.

Her comments come despite a finding by the public protector's office that Motsoeneng lied about his matric certificate and irregularly increased his own salary.

Save Our SABC Coalition spokesperson Kate Skinner explained why the appointment was irregular.

"It wasn't properly advertised. In fact, I confirmed it with the unions today that no advert went out either externally or internally."
