JOHANNESBURG - Honeydew and Zandspruit are desperately trying to find alternative accommodation after being evicted from their homes.

The evictions come as temperatures across Gauteng plummet well below freezing.

The Red Ants and Johannesburg metro police officers conducted a joint operation in the area.

Residents have been illegally occupying a complex in Honeydew and land in Zandspruit.

The sheriff confirmed the evictions were carried out after a court order was issued.

The Red Ants moved in this morning, throwing out mattresses, computer screens and electric appliances.

An elderly woman with a baby strapped to her back searched through the items while another man cried quietly as he watched the Red Ants evict dozens of families.

After a few hours, a truck belonging to the Red Ants left the scene with some workers laughing as the vehicle left the complex.

Earlier on Tuesday, a scuffle broke out after residents threw rocks at the Red Ants.

Police were forced to intervene.
