JHB: Muslims targeted during Ramadaan
Around 300 worshippers were robbed at a central Joburg mosque on Thursday.
JOHANNESBURG - Members of the Muslim community in Johannesburg say they are being targeted by criminals who are taking advantage of their vulnerability during the holy month of Ramadaan.
Around 300 worshipers were robbed at a mosque in central Johannesburg last Thursday.
Six armed men held them up before making off with money and cellphones.
On Friday, a doctor and his son were on their way to early morning prayers in Robertsham when they were attacked by armed men.
The doctor was shot and declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
The Booysens Community Policing Forum's Mohammed Ismail says the attacks are strategically timed.
"There are strategic times when people enter and leave their homes. For example, for early morning prayer when this Doctor was shot as well as the time of breaking fast and evening prayers."
Gauteng police say they're following up various leads following both incidents.
