CAPE TOWN - A Cape Town policeman who allegedly raped two young boys faces statutory rape and sexual assault charges.

The officer appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrates Court on Friday.

The warrant officer, who worked at the Bellville South police station, was arrested this week.

The two 14-year-old boys were allegedly raped on numerous occasions and over a number of years.

It is believed the policeman paid the boys between R50 and R200 so they wouldn't report him to authorities.

The officer had difficulty standing in the dock and appeared to be in pain.

He claims the pain is due to a back injury he is struggling with.

The cop was rushed to hospital on Thursday after he tried to commit suicide while in custody.

He has since been suspended from the South African Police Services.

The suspect will remain in custody until his next court appearance on 11 July.
