CAPE TOWN - The Stellenbosch Municipality on Monday ordered flags be flown at half-mast in honour of Professor Russel Botman.

The 60-year old Stellenbosch University Rector and Vice-Chancellor died in his sleep at his home on Friday night.

Botman was first appointed as Rector in 2007 and was re-appointed for a second five-year term in 2012.

President Jacob Zuma and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu are among the thousands of people from around the country who paid tribute to the well-known academic.

Stellenbosch mayor Conrad Sidego says funeral arrangements are still underway.

"The flag will fly at half-mast until the funeral services. We don't exactly know when that will be at this stage. We had a very close relationship."
