JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng police say they have called in several people for questioning in connection with the murder of 10 illegal miners at a disused mine shaft in Benoni on the East Rand.

The bodies of the miners were discovered last week, all apparently shot execution style.

The motive for the killings is still unclear but it's believed they were killed by a rival group of illegal miners.

The police's Lungelo Dlamini says the suspects are still at large.

"We have taken statements from some of the witnesses, there is information we are following. At this stage no one has been arrested."

Mineral Resources Minister Ngoako Ramatlhodi says disused mines should be policed to prevent illegal mining.

Ramatlhodi adds his department will focus on implementing measures to ultimately eradicate illegal mining.

"We need good policing and we need to deal with the kingpins."
