JOHANNESBURG - MEC for Infrastructure Development, Nandi Mayathula-Khoza, says the state of some Gauteng hospitals is unacceptable and needs to be improved urgently.

The MEC made an unannounced visit to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto yesterday.

She said she was stunned at the dismal state of the hospital's sanitation and maternity wards, with her describing the conditions as "terrible".

"What I saw is unacceptable."

Mayathula-Khoza said her department would be monitoring the situation to see if there was an improvement over the next few months.

The MEC has visited three Gauteng hospitals so far and said her department was working to improve the standard of equipment, including boilers, generator and lifts.
