JOHANNESBURG - Municipalities with water shortages will receive funding and expertise from the South African Local Government Association (Salga) to build and refurbish old infrastructure.

The association launched the municipal benchmarking initiative in partnership with the Water Research Commission on Tuesday.

Officials plan to measure water provision performance in all municipalities.

Salga Chief Executive Officer Xolile George said, "It's an exciting initiative because it gives us the opportunity to assess the landscape across all municipalities, and how we'll provide water and what challenges exist."

Earlier this year, four people died allegedly at the hands of police during a water protest in Mothutlung.

In Bloemhof in the North West, three babies died after drinking contaminated water.
