JOHANNESBURG - Mineral Resources Minister Ngoako Ramatlhodi says disused mines should be policed to prevent illegal mining.

His statement comes after the discovery of the bodies of eight men at an abandoned mine in Benoni at the weekend.

All of the suspected illegal miners had been shot dead execution style.

Police were called to the crime scene by security guards employed at the mine at around 9:30 on Saturday morning but it still remains unclear when the men were actually killed.

Authorities say the motive for the killings remains unclear at this stage. No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

Ramatlhodi says his department will focus on implementing measures to ultimately eradicate illegal mining.

"We need good policing and we need to deal with the kingpins."
