CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Social Development Department on Monday called on frail care facilities to ensure their staff are properly certified and qualified to deal with the elderly.

Authorities are concerned some smaller facilities are not fully aware of all the aspects of the Older Persons Act.

Social Development MEC Albert Fritz says the act is there to protect senior citizens from being abused.

"Down the road from where I live, there is a house where a whole lot of old people were put in. They sit there from the morning to the evening, doing nothing."
