JOHANNESBURG - It was a superb game between France and Switzerland that ended in odd circumstances.

France dismantled the Swiss' defence and passed goals around.

Karim Benzema demonstrated an outstanding performance.

The first goal came from Olivier Giroud with a beautiful header and in the blink of an eye Blaise Matuidi made it 2-0.

There was a sting in every French attack when from a Swiss corner and the French broke down the left.

Benzema fed an onrushing Giroud who had so much space. Giroud sent the ball square for the right winger Mathieu Valbuena, who slammed the ball home past.

France were superb in the opening half, three goals to the good with a missed penalty and hitting the crossbar to boot. Giroud and Matuidi grabbed two goals in blisteringly quick succession before Benzema missed a penalty andCabaye hit the bar from the follow-up.

Benzema finally scored the fourth goal then provided Moussa Sissoko with a pass that ensured the fifth goal.

The Swiss, however, pulled their socked up towards the end of the game with two goals from Blerim D┼żemaili and Granit Xhaka respectively.

Switzerland, who lost only once in the last two years and are sixth in Fifa's world rankings, have three points, while Ecuador and Honduras are yet to get off the mark ahead of their meeting later on Friday.
