Man faces charges for 'punishing' dog
Police arrested the Knysna man after residents saw him chain and drag his dog behind his sports car.
CAPE TOWN - Southern Cape police say a 65-year-old Knysna man is facing several charges under the Animal Protection Act.
The man is accused of dragging his dog behind his vehicle last week.
He made a brief appearance in the Knysna Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
The female Rhodesian Ridgeback reportedly escaped from her owner's yard.
But one-year-old Gina's punishment included being chained behind the elderly man's vehicle and being dragged at high speed over speed humps.
Several Lake Brenton residents, who witnessed the incident, intervened and took the animal to a Knysna vet.
Gina is recovering at the facility but the staff there say she will most likely always feel the trauma of the incident.
The man will reappear in court again next month and it's doubtful he will ever be allowed to own a pet again.
