CAPE TOWN - A child rights NGO says online sexual predators are on the rise in South Africa.

This comes as Western Cape police are searching for an alleged Facebook rapist targeting teen girls in Cape Town.

It's believed the man raped a girl two weeks ago in Mitchells Plain after befriending her on the social media site.

Accepting a friend request and chatting online seems harmless but for hundreds of women across the world it's had devastating effects ending in rape and murder.

"We have certainly seen an increase in the number of predators on Facebook.

In 2012 serial rapist Thabo Bester, the so-called "Facebook rapist" was arrested and jailed for life after he lured his victims on social media.
