CAPE TOWN - Some Gugulethu residents have expressed anger at the gruesome murder of a 62-year-old man.

Mbuyiselo Manona was killed, allegedly by a Zimbabwean man, in the township on Tuesday.

When police arrived on the scene, they found Manona stabbed to death and the suspect eating his heart.

It was eerily quiet at number 4 Tembisa Street in Gugulethu this morning, with the off-white gates locked and a car parked in the driveway.

The humble home is where Tuesday's grisly murder took place.

Neighbour Nomsa Mpambo says she can't believe what happened.

She's described Manona as a nice man.

"I don't think he did anything to hurt that guy because he's so sweet. He greets everybody. I don't know what to say."

It's understood Manona's girlfriend Nomonde Soloshe is not at home and is staying at her mother's.

Meanwhile, Western Cape Deputy Police Commissioner Sharon Jephta believes a lover's spat may be the motive behind the killing.

She says, "Looking at the motive, it's definitely a love triangle, it's relationship issues. So it's problematic."

Jephta says counselling has been provided.

"It was very gruesome. We had to debrief our members and offer them support and put a further support system in place for them. We did that with those who were present in the house as well."

The man is expected to appear in court soon.

Police also say tests will determine if he was under the influence of drugs or liquor.
