HARARE - Seven gold miners have been killed in central Zimbabwe after their lift broke and plummeted into the flooded base of a mineshaft.

The accident happened at the beginning of a shift at Golden Valley mine near the central town of Kadoma on Monday evening.

Authorities have now shut down operations at the mine to investigate the accident.

Reports say 11 other miners escaped with injuries.

Some of the survivors have spoken of the terrifying moment when the lift they were using suddenly started gaining speed.

Several men managed to escape by clambering onto the top of the cage when it hit the water at the bottom of the 400-metre shaft.

They were rescued 20 minutes later but seven miners drowned, according to the Chronicle newspaper.

This comes a few days after the country marked 42 years since another mining disaster in Hwange, when over 400 coal miners were killed.
