JOHANNESBURG - It's unclear what caused the death of a 39-year old man who collapsed at the final stretch of the Comrades Marathon last weekend.

Louis du Preez finished his second marathon in just under 11 hours, but collapsed at the finish line.

He was taken to St Augustine Hospital in Durban, where he remained in intensive care unit (ICU).

Du Preez was a member of the Magnolia Road Runners club in Muckleneuk, Pretoria.

The clubs chairman Tinus Marais said, "He collapsed and they took him to hospital where spent a whole week. He had kidney and liver failure and the doctor seems to think he had some viral infection before the race that he didn't know about. On Sunday, a week later, he passed away."
