Alex residents rebuild homes
A blaze destroyed over 70 shacks in Alexandra in northern Johannesburg on Tuesday.
JOHANNESBURG - A number of Alexandra residents have started rebuilding their homes after a fire destroyed an estimated 70 shacks in the area earlier today.
The fire broke out in one of the shacks early on Tuesday morning after a stove was allegedly left unattended.
Hundreds of people have been displaced.
Residents are now collecting what is left of their homes and are using scrap metal to build shelter for their families.
They say they have no alternative but to try rebuild their shacks because they have nowhere else to go.
Residents have pleaded with government to give them RDP houses in order for them to live better lives.
Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson Nana Radebe says the families will be provided with relief parcels tonight.
