CAPE TOWN - Correctional Services confirmed the Cape Town man who shot and killed UK honeymooner Anni Dewani is in a critical condition in hospital.

Eyewitness News understands triggerman Xolile Mngeni was admitted to Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town on Tuesday.

In 2011, Mngeni was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour, but during his lengthy trial it was stated that his cancer had disappeared.

Correctional service's Simphiwe Xako said he can't reveal why Mngeni is back in hospital.

"He was transferred from the correctional services centre to the hospital. The doctors said he's in a critical condition."

Dewani was killed in an apparent staged hi-jacking in Cape Town in 2010.

In April, her husband Shrien Dewani was extradited to South Africa to face charges of murder.
