JOHANNESBURG - A group of residents gathered outside the Alexandra Magistrates Court following a mass eviction in the Johannesburg township, which has left an estimated 400 people on the streets.

Yesterday, the Red Ants evicted residents living on 1st Avenue who are now demanding clarity on the court papers issued during the forced removals.

Last night hundreds of men, women and children spent the night on the street after being evicted from their shacks.

According to community leader Bruce Serale, between 100 and 200 shacks were demolished yesterday.

He said last night was tough with the cold conditions.

"We have children and they slept outside and they had to go to school today."

Serale said the court papers issued yesterday were dated 2011, raising speculation among residents that the evictions are illegal or linked to corrupt deals.
