OR Tambo gang: More suspects at large
The police are searching for 11 more members of a gang targeting people leaving the airport.
JOHANNESBURG - The National Investigating Unit is searching for 11 more suspects belonging to a gang who target people leaving OR Tambo International Airport.
Eighteen suspects were arrested since the formation of the unit in September.
The _Star _newspaper reported that it's understood the suspects used blue lights and fake police identification to pull over people and then rob them.
The police's Solomon Makgale said, "The team has been working hard to identify suspects and it has been successful as the 11 suspects were identified through fingerprints. We hope to arrest them soon."
Police said from September last year, the number of reported incidents decreased dramatically.
National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega suggested last year that retired detectives be used to help crack high-profile cases.
Makgale said so far the unit has been successful.
"We draw on the experience of some of the detectives who've retired."
Over 200 cases were reported last year and the incidents have dropped to about five per month.
