Evicted Alex families face bleak conditions
Around 25 families have been removed from a plot of land just days before a cold front.
JOHANNESBURG - Just days before a "brutal" cold front is expected to hit South Africa, more than 25 families have been evicted from a plot of land on 1st Avenue in Alexandra, Johannesburg.
Scores of Red Ants have already moved furniture, clothes and vehicles from the large plot of land which was home to more than 100 people.
Hundreds of bystanders and those who are being evicted are looking on helplessly as the eviction team continues to remove belongings.
It's still unclear why the eviction is taking place and police on the scene say they are simply overseeing the Red Ants' operation.
"The eviction order is being executed by the Red Ants and we as the police, are just here to make sure there is a safe and secure environment for all the people," said Alexandra Station Commander Daniel Ngcobo.
Ngcobo said the police presence in the area is to ensure that the eviction order is implemented without incident.
The South African Weather Service says temperatures in Gauteng are expected to start dropping from tomorrow.
