CAPE TOWN - Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer says Victor Matfield was the logical choice as captain due to his vast experience.

Matfield will skipper the Boks in the absence of regular captain Jean de Villiers for the June incoming series.

Matfield last featured for the Boks at the 2011 World Cup.

His first game back will also see him return as captain, which will be this Saturday against the World XV, followed by tests against Wales and Scotland.

Bismarck du Plessis and Fourie du Preez were also considered.

But Meyer says everyone's in agreement that Matfield is the right man for the job.

"I just felt most of the players have played under Victor and most of the guys that will start on Saturday would have played under him.

"I have consulted with the team and SA Rugby and a lot of other people and you know any of those three guys, I believe can be a great captain. But Victor has done it before and he has done it with distinction."
