ANC slams DA MP's 'racist' tweet
Mike Waters tweeted a photo of dogs urinating on a poster of the president.
CAPE TOWN - The newly-appointed Deputy Chief Whip of the Democratic Alliance (DA) Mike Waters has sparked a storm of criticism after tweeting a picture of dogs queuing to urinate on a poster of President Jacob Zuma.
The controversial picture contains the phrase: Voting Day. Make your mark.
The African National Congress (ANC) says linking ANC voters to dogs is racist and ill-befitting a senior Member of Parliament.
Waters has since deleted the tweet and posted a brief apology from his Twitter account that reads.
Hi all. If I offended anyone in any way I apologise.
- Michael Waters (@MichaelWatersMP) June 3, 2014
But ANC national spokesperson Zizi Kodwa says the apology is not enough.
"This is not like an ordinary member who's joined the party. He's a seasoned senior member of the party who has been in Parliament before. He sees people across the National Assembly in the chamber as nothing else but dogs."
Kodwa says Waters needs to go beyond just apologising and says he and the DA need to go out and educate the public about political tolerance and non-racialism.
Waters has told Eyewitness News he will be responding in a written statement later today.
