CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Community Safety Department has called for improved security at social grant pay out points following a deadly shootout between robbers and police in Bishop Lavis on Sunday.

Armed men stormed a Shoprite outlet, where grant beneficiaries were queuing for their monthly pay outs.

When police arrived on the scene, a shootout erupted and one of the robbers was shot and killed.

A number of arrests were also made.

The police's Lorencial Johnson said, "Five firearms were recovered on the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash believed to have been taken. We have opened cases of armed robbery, attempted murder, malicious damage to property and the possession of illegal firearms and ammunition."

Community Safety MEC Dan Plato says security guards at the pay point were helpless.

"This is not the first time. The security guards on the scene had no chance against the robbers, they were not armed."
