KIEV - Ukraine has warned pro-Russian forces in the east of the country to surrender or else face the full wrath of the army.

But the fighters show no signs of giving up - setting the stage for even more bloodshed in a conflict that in the last week alone claimed more than a hundred lives.

If there's one truth about war it's that ordinary citizens inevitably find themselves in the line of fire.

A school, an orphanage, a children's hospital and residential homes have all been hit by shells in recent days.

Food and medical supplies in some Eastern Ukrainian cities are already running low, and children are being evacuated from the more violent neighbourhoods.

Fighting between the miliitary and anti-government forces show no signs of abating as neither side is willing to admit defeat.

Newly elected president Petro Poroshenko has vowed to deal with the situation swiftly, but his comments have only raised the stakes in a conflict that keeps growing by the day.
