CAPE TOWN - The Department of Social Development says more than 30,000 child abuse cases have been recorded over the past decade.

The department launched Child Protection Week on Sunday in Delft where some of the country's most shocking abuse cases have been reported this year.

Patrick Solomons, spokesperson for children's rights organisation Molo Songololo said, "It's mainly children in poor, under-resourced communities with high levels of unemployment and high abuse. We need to prioritise those areas."

Meanwhile, the Delft Community Policing Forum (CPF) has called on the department to do more in fighting violence against children.
