Igesund to know future on Monday
Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund will sit down on Monday with SAFA.
JOHANNESBURG - Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund will sit down on Monday with the South African Football Association (SAFA) committee to discuss his future as national team coach.
SAFA held a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Saturday to discuss the coach's position and no final decision was made.
Igesund's contract with the national team ends in July and the SAFA governing body must decide whether to extend his contract or hire a new man to take over as the national team prepares for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) which takes place in September.
Media reports suggest former coach Carlos Querioz could make a return to the position. While current Nigeria coach Stephen Keishi's name has also been mentioned.
Safa President Danny Jordaan says the national team has done well in the matches against Australia and New Zealand.
He says the committee will meet with Igesund on Monday at 3pm. At 4pm on Monday an outcome will be reached.
"There are two possible outcomes from Monday's meeting. We cannot have a discussion on the position without him. We have a short list of coaches we'd like to talk to and Gordon is on that list.
"There are key targets in his contract and we must engage with him about those targets and see if there are grounds for continuation.
"The committee on Monday must make a recommendation to the NEC about the coaching position.
"We must have a coach in place by the middle of July because we have Afcon qualifiers coming up."
