Gangs: Safety dept to intervene
MEC Dan Plato says he’s personally seen youth gangsters fighting in the Khayelitsha township.
CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Department of Community Safety says it will intervene after flare-ups of youth gang violence in several communities in the province.
MEC Dan Plato says he's personally seen youth gangsters fighting in the Khayelitsha township.
He says he's also aware of the emergence of more youngsters joining gangs in Valhalla Park and in Saldanha Bay.
Plato says his department is planning roadshows in the coming weeks to address the problem.
"It's happening from time to time. I visited Khayelitsha some time ago and I walked into a youth gang fight so it is a reality. It is not a thing that is happening every day but from time to time on an ad hoc basis."
Earlier this month the Khayelitsha Commission of Inquiry on Tuesday heard that police can play an important role in negotiating truces between gangs.
T he Khayelitsha Commission of Inquiry wrapped up on Thursday.
