CAPE TOWN - A four-month-old foetus found in Cape Town Gardens appears to be the result of an illegal abortion, the Western Cape Social Development Department said on Friday.

A homeless man found the foetus in a rubbish bin.

Police are investigating a concealment of birth case.

Western Cape Social Development MEC Albert Fritz says there is no need for women to visit illegal abortion centres.

"Please make contact with your nearest social development centre or police station so that the birth can occur and we can take care of the child."

With next week marking Child Protection Week, the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children revealed that only three percent of the province's child violence perpetrators face conviction.
