NIGERIA - Residents on Wednesday claimed the death toll from the latest Boko Haram attack had reached 42.

Military officials confirmed gunmen launched an assault on villages in the Borno State.

The gunman opened fire on residents and petrol bombed houses.

The latest onslaught comes just hours after Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan announced an all-out offensive against the Islamist group.

Earlier on Thursday, Jonathan reassured the families of 219 kidnapped girls that government is doing everything possible to rescue them.
