De Jager sentence brings closure
Charmaine Mare’s mother says she’s found closure now that Johannes de Jager has been sentenced.
CAPE TOWN - The mother of 16-year-old murder victim Charmaine Mare says she has found closure now that her child's killer has been sentenced.
Johannes de Jager was handed multiple life sentences for the murders of Mare and 18-year-old sex worker Hiltina Alexander.
He was sentenced in the Western Cape High Court on Tuesday.
Katrina Mare says that while the stiff sentence will not bring her child back, she is satisfied with the court's decision.
"We've all now found peace and I think that's what my daughter would have wanted."
Katrina described de Jager as a violent person, who plays mind games with people.
De Jager received three life sentences for two rapes and two murders as well as a six year sentence for dismembering Mare's body.
In handing down the sentence Judge Chuma Cossie said rape and murder are the most degrading crimes.
She described both murders as brutal and savage.
The National Prosecuting Authority has welcomed the punishment.
