CAPE TOWN - A Beaufort West man accused of attacking his girlfriend's two-year-old son abandoned his bail application on Wednesday.

The man appeared in the Beaufort West Magistrates Court.

The 28-year-old suspect apparently slapped, kicked and burnt the toddler with boiling water while holding the child and his mother captive in their home in Nelson Mandela Square.

The toddler was discharged from George Hospital last week, despite having sustained multiple injuries.

Police spokesperson Malcolm Poje says the case was postponed to 27 June.

The accused will remain in police custody.

Community members came out in their numbers to support the family.
