Performers to raise funds for miners' families
Organisers of the event have promised a lineup of well-known jazz artists at Orbit Jazz Club.
JOHANNESBURG - Jazz lovers have just under two hours to get to the Orbit Jazz Club in Braamfontein for a concert aimed at raising funds for the families of striking miners on the platinum belt.
Organisers of the event have promised a lineup of well-known jazz artists such as Gloria Bosman, Sydney Mavundla, Thembinkosi Mavimbela and more.
All proceeds of the event will go towards the families of the miners, some of whom have been without food for days at a time.
Organiser of the event Lauren Fok says, "The strike really is much more than a labour dispute. It's about the growing inequality. The concert is taking place at 81 The Quarter Street, the formal programme goes from 5pm to 8pm."
Meanwhile, The Gift of the Givers Foundation on Sunday said it has provided relief aid to more than 10,000 mineworkers and their families on the platinum belt.
This is the final day of its intervention.
Around 70,000 members of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) have been on strike for 17 weeks, demanding a basic salary of R12,500 per month.
