DA: Madonsela must probe Sassa scandal

Virginia Petersen has described the allegations to Eyewitness News as an attack on her integrity.

The DA is calling on Public Protector Thuli Madonsela to investigate allegations levelled against the CEO of the South African Social Security Agency.

CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) is calling on Public Protector Thuli Madonsela to investigate allegations levelled against the CEO of the South African Social Security Agency.

Virginia Petersen is believed to be involved in a 'jobs for pals' scandal.

A Sunday Times report suggests she allegedly secured jobs for family members of her friends.

Petersen has however described the allegations to Eyewitness News as an attack on her integrity.

But the DA's Mike Walters disagrees.

"We are writing to the public protector, requesting that she investigates these allegations of cronyism and corruption. This is certainly not the first time Miss Petersen has been implicated in an employment scandal.

"Previously, she was implicated in the appointment of her friend."

Petersen says discussions will now be held with senior officials.

"I think there are obviously serious attempts to discredit my integrity. I don't think I want to pursue this matter. I think there will be processes in order to deal with it."

She says discussions with internal senior bosses will be held, but declined to comment on the allegations.

"It will have to be discussed with the minister and we will inform the public if decisions are made as to what will transpire to deal with the internal matter."
