CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town's Fire and Rescue Services say the cause of a massive blaze which left more than 800 people destitute in the Masiphumelele informal settlement is still not clear.

The fire engulfed a large part of the informal settlement yesterday, destroying over 200 shacks.

Several community members lost all their possessions.

Residents have been trying to salvage what they can.

At least six people, including a firefighter, were treated for smoke inhalation.

Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Liezl Moodie says the area affected by the fire was quite substantial.

The injured were treated on scene and those who required further attention were taken to hospital.
