CAPE TOWN - Newly appointed Western Cape Cultural Affairs and Sport MEC Nomafrench Mbombo on Friday said it is an honour to take on the job.

She is one of only two new female MEC's in Western Cape Premier Helen Zille's Cabinet.

Mbombo says she only heard about her appointment during the week.

Zille said she chose the University of the Western Cape (UWC) academic because of her referrals and outstanding curriculum vitae (CV).

The premier has often defended her mostly male Cabinet.

In 2009, the matter went to court after complaints were received about the composition of the Western Cape Cabinet.

Zille has once again come under fire for the gender and racial composition, with the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) saying it lacks diversity.

Western Cape MECs will be sworn in on Monday.
