JOHANNESBURG - New Gauteng premier David Makhura will today announce who his MECs will be after he was sworn into office on Wednesday.

The new MECs will be in charge of some of the important departments such as health and education.

This is Makhura's first big test as premier as he has to strike a balance between appointing those favoured by the Gauteng ANC, while wanting to ensure some continuity with Nomvula Mokonyane's administration.

He was Gauteng ANC provincial secretary for 12 years and seems to have a deep understanding of the political lie of the land in this province.

Makhura is also likely to consult with Gauteng ANC leader Paul Mashatile before making his announcement.

Under the ruling party's guidelines, 60 percent of his appointments will have to be women because the party only has one female premier.
