JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Education Department (GED) has initiated an investigation into allegations of corporal punishment at the Rebontsheng Primary School in Vosloorus.

A teacher has been accused of beating a grade two pupil with a ruler several times before throwing a hard cover book in her face causing her to bleed.

Although the incident happened in February the department said it was brought to its attention yesterday.

Spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said officials have been sent to the school to find out what happened.

"We encourage all parents whose children experienced this to come forward as corporal punishment is banned. We will not hesitate to act."
