Masuku's death met with anger
Backing vocalist for Johnny Clegg, Bongani Masuku was shot and killed during a botched hijacking.
JOHANNESBURG - The local music world is reeling after the murder of Johnny Clegg's backing vocalist Bongani Masuku, who was attacked in an apparent botched hijacking in Troyeville.
The 50-year-old who has been working with Clegg since 1992 was shot during an altercation with four robbers on Saturday night.
Police said he managed to drive himself to a nearby fire station where he collapsed and died.
Clegg's manager, Roddy Quin, described Masuku as a warm, gentle and kind person.
"He was a non-violent and talented person who was dedicated to his work."
Quin said Masuku's death is senseless.
"It's shocking and I feel angry and sad at the same time."
Clegg was too emotional to speak to the media, but described Masuku in a Facebook post as a stalwart performer, hardworking musician and good friend.
