'SA are the biggest drinkers in Africa'
South Africa placed number one on the list followed closely by Gabon and Namibia.
CAPE TOWN - South Africans have been identified as the biggest drinkers on the continent.
This is according to a World Health Organisation (WHO) report released in Geneva earlier this week.
South Africa were followed closely by Gabon and then Namibia.
Globally 3,3 million people died in 2012 because of excessive alcohol consumption.
The WHO said drinking too much causes more than 200 diseases including liver cirrhosis and some cancers.
The organisation report states more men die from alcohol abuse, but more women are susceptible to alcohol related illnesses.
Although South Africa may have the most alcohol dependents on the continent, Europe has the highest alcohol consumption per capita globally.
