Police quash rumours over viral video

It's unclear when the viral video was recorded or whether the woman survived.

JOHANNESBURG - Police are struggling to establish the origin of a video which has gone viral showing a large mob attacking a woman.

It's unclear where or when the footage was recorded or whether the woman survived.

It's been claimed she assaulted because she was a Congress of the People supporter but the party said it's not aware of any recent attack on any of its members.

Reports suggest the video was originally uploaded by a Dutch journalist who claims the incident took place around election time this year.

Authorities however believe the video is much older.

Video: Woman at hands of mob.

The video shows a woman lying on the ground with scores of people around her before members of the crowd take turns kicking her in the sides and the face before she's stomped on.

Later in the video the crowd bludgeons the victim with the back of an axe.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the police.
