CAPE TOWN - Police have arrested a man today in connection with an arson attack at a clothing store in Cavendish Square mall in Claremont.

The blaze broke out in a Diesel store yesterday morning.

Cavendish Square management says the man entered the store and doused the display window with petrol. He then started a fire before fleeing.

It is believed he tried to create a diversion when he realised he could not escape after a failed robbery. As a result, the mall evacuated.

The extent of the damage to the store is still being assessed.

Police are investigating a case of arson although it is unclear when the suspect will appear in court.
