CAPE TOWN - Eskom said its system will remain tight until the first two units of the multimillion rand Medupi Power Station comes on line.

In March the parastatal declared a power emergency, raising concerns about whether Eskom would be able to keep the lights on this winter.

The power utility's Mongezi Ntsokolo says the first Medupi unit is expected to start generating power towards the end of this year.

"We're still on target to get the first unit by the end of this year and then the next unit next year. But we're working frantically around the clock and working very hard to ensure available infrastructure works and delivers but also that the new build brings in the additional capacity that we require."

Construction on the Medupi Power Station began in 2007 but it's been hit by several delays, including violent strikes.
