'ANC will weaken in next 5 years'
Allister Sparks says the DA and EFF will continue to challenge the ANC's support base.
CAPE TOWN - Veteran journalist and author Allister Sparks predicted on Monday that the African National Congress
(ANC) would weaken slowly and steadily over the next five years.
This comes after the Democratic Alliance (DA) showed a growth in its support base in many urban areas at the polls last week.
Sparks spoke in Cape Town about his thoughts on the recent elections that took place on 7 May.
The ANC went on to dominate each of the eight provinces except the Western Cape. But, the party also experienced a reduction in its majority.
" The DA is growing in all metropolitan areas and that is significant because we are an urbanising society."
Sparks added that the rapidly growing Economic Freedom Front (EFF) could pose a threat to the ruling party in the near future.
He said that unless the ANC and DA could work together in greater harmony, South Africa could be experiencing a tricky five years.
