Eyewitness News understands an anaesthetist will be called to testify about gastric emptying and its use to determine time of death.

State pathologist Gert Saayman told the court the food found in Steenkamp's stomach had been ingested no more than two hours prior to her death.

This puts her up and awake at a time Pistorius's neighbour said she heard what sounded like a woman having an argument.

The defence team challenged the reliability of determining the time of death by studying the contents of the stomach.

Defence forensic expert Wollie Wolmarans is also expected testify today.
