Gugulethu: Protesters stone EWN reporters
Disgruntled residents barricaded a road, refused to speak to reporters & stoned an EWN vehicle.
JOHANNESBURG - Angry residents of the Gugulethu informal settlement on the East Rand have stoned Eyewitness News reporters during a violent protest in the area.
Residents took to the streets in the early hours of this morning and police have so far arrested 20 people for public violence, after using rubber bullets and teargas to control the crowd.
Authorities are yet to confirm claims that one person was shot and killed in the area this morning.
Residents declined to speak to journalists about their grievances, choosing instead to hurl stones at reporters and an Eyewitness News vehicle.
The community barricaded a main road in the area this morning, bringing the informal settlement to a virtual standstill.
They have blocked access to the informal settlement with rocks, rubble and other objects.
While it's unclear what the protest is about, it's believed to be related to a lack of service delivery.
More police are being deployed to the volatile area.
