Fransman vows to improve farming sector
The ANC Western Cape says the farming sector in the Western Cape still faces many obstacles.
CAPE TOWN - ANC Western Cape leader Marius Fransman has vowed problems affecting the province's farming sector will not continue under a provincial government led by the party.
Fransman yesterday addressed farm labourers in De Doorns, the epicentre of violent strikes in 2012 and early 2013.
He said the sector still faces many obstacles.
"We can't continue in a situation where farmers are abusing farmworkers so that must stop after 7 May."
Between November 2012 and January 2013, hundreds of workers embarked on often violent strikes over low wages.
Hundreds of hectares of vineyards were torched in Hex River Valley and in several other Western Cape farming communities late last year.
