Chamber slams employment equity report

JOHANNESBURG - The Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry has described a recent report on employment equity as a "superficial document" that will do little to promote real development.

The 14th report of the Commission for Employment Equity shows there's still an over-representation of white people in top management positions in the workplace.

In the Western Cape, white males make up 62 percent of top posts, while coloureds and black males constitute just 8.3 and 3.9 percent respectively.

The commission's Andrew Madella says this is a worrying factor.

"You will find proportionally higher numbers are blacks and by that I'm including Indians and coloureds. I don't think this argument of black people are unqualified and uneducated is true. It's a myth."

But the chamber says the intention and spirit of employment equity is not simply to look at racial quotas of top-paying jobs, but to look at how to develop skilled employees.
