Pirates look to end season on a high
The Buccaneers take on Maritzburg United tonight, while Ajax play Supersport United.
CAPE TOWN - Orlando Pirates will look to end the 2013/14 season on a high after enduring a turbulent campaign so far.
Vladimir Vermezovic's men take on Maritzburg United on Tuesday evening, who they will also face in the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup.
Vermezovic says securing a top eight finish and winning the Nedbank Cup is his team's main priority heading into the final weeks of the season, but was quick to add that he is fully focused on the league clash rather than the Cup game for now.
"We have six games in the league and we have to secure our position in the top eight. Every game we watch separately and every game is very important for us."
Maritzburg coach Steve Komphela admitted that he is not surprised that Pirates are yet to gel under Vermezovic, who has only been in charge for eight games.
Since joining, Vermezovic has seen his side claim four victories - two in the league - and Komphela believes it will take time for the team to understand Vermezovic's philosophy.
"He has not had a good start which is normal for any new coach. You don't hit the ground running, it's difficult. There has to be chemistry, understanding of the players, your tactical approach, your philosophy and all that. There has to be that emotional glue and emotional glue does not come easily."
Tonight's other game sees Ajax Cape Town hosting Supersport United at Cape Town Stadium, with the Urban Warriors looking for maximum points from their final home game of the season.
Ajax striker Eleazar Rodgers scored a brace against Golden Arrows last week, and is hoping to continue his fine form continues when his side takes on Matstastansa on Tuesday night.
"It's always good getting goals. I think I am definitely confident going into the next game, not to put pressure on myself but to get more goals. It's always good to score a brace as a striker."
Both matches kick off at 7:30pm.
