UCT to probe attack after Varsity Cup
A female student from the North West was punched in the face by a rugby player from UCT.
CAPE TOWN - The University of Cape Town (UCT) has launched an investigation into a rugby brawl in Potchefstroom which left a student from the North West hospitalised.
The incident happened at a fast food restaurant on Monday night after the Varsity Cup final between UCT's Ikey Tigers and North West University's Pukke.
CCTV footage shows the female student involved in a fight, allegedly between rugby players from rival teams.
Irini Agathagelou, 21, took to Facebook and claimed she was a victim of woman abuse, the Citizen reported on Thursday.
The footage clearly showed her being punched in the face.
The beauty therapy student's father Michael Agathagelou said they were only informed about the incident the next day.
"She has a bad laceration on her face and was in hospital on a drip. We were only informed about it the next day after she was discharged from hospital. Mentally, she's very scarred."
UCT said the incident is being viewed in a very serious light.
